Strange Loops 4
acrylic on panel,
30 x 30 in.,
2007
This is the fourth in my series of "Strange Loops" paintings. The title Strange Loops comes from Douglas Hofstadter, who uses the metaphor of strange loops to suggest ways in which our mind may produce a sense of self and consciousness. Hofstatder is the author of Godel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid
, where I believe he first coined the term. In these paintings, I often "tessellate" a pattern, loop it around back on top of itself, and then as in this case, do so with multiple layers of painting.
Although it's hard to tell from the photograph, the various layers of this painting appear more or less prominently depending upon the angle in which you view it due to the use of interference and metallic paints.
